Instruction Supplement IS100

Mitered Frames and Borders

  1. Always leave a ¼" seam allowance and press to the darker fabric unless noted otherwise.
  2. Measure the featured item to be framed/bordered for length (L), and width (W). The featured item may be a unique piece of fabric, fabric with a poem printed on it, or the entire quilt top.
  3. If you have more than one fabric for the frame/border, stitch all the fabric strips together to form a single rectangle-shaped piece (f/b). This speeds the process of mitering each corner because you can miter all of the frame/border fabrics at the same time.
  4. Cut the f/b fabric into two sections L + 16" long for the sides. Cut the f/b fabric into two sections W + 16" long for the top and bottom.
  5. Place one side (L + 16") f/b face up on the table. Place the featured item face down on the side f/b, align the side edge of the featured item with the edge of the side f/b that you want to be closest to the featured item. Note: for a single fabric f/b both edges are the same. When the f/b is two or more fabrics stitched together align the featured item with the same color fabric for each of the four sides. Center the featured item on the f/b. Stitch along the edge of the featured item starting ¼" down from the top and stopping ¼" up from the bottom.
  6. Turn the two pieces (featured fabric and one side f/b) face up and fold the f/b back on itself and away from the bottom edge of the featured item. Do not press open.
  7. Place the bottom (W + 16") f/b face up on the table. Place the featured item face down on the f/b; align the bottom of the featured item with the edge of the f/b that you want to be closest to the featured item. Stitch along the edge starting ¼" in from the right edge of the featured item, and stopping ¼" in from the left edge of the featured item.
  8. Press both f/bs open and turn the three pieces right side up. Fold the loose bottom end of the side f/b at a 45-degree angle at the lower right corner of the featured item. Press the fold lightly.
  9. Lay the side f/b right side down on the bottom f/b, folding the featured item in half diagonally. Open the fold you pressed in the side f/b. Stitch both f/bs together along the fold. Trim to ¼" seam allowance.
  10. Turn the three pieces (featured fabric and two side f/bs) face down and fold the bottom f/b back on itself and away from the unfinished side of the featured item.
  11. Place one side (L + 16") f/b face up on the table. Place the featured item face down on the side f/b. Align the unfinished edge of the featured item with the edge of the side f/b that you want closest to the featured item. Center the featured item on the side f/b. Stitch along the edge of the featured item starting ¼" down from the top and stopping ¼" up from the bottom. Press all f/bs open. And turn the four pieces right side up.
  12. Fold the loose bottom end of the side f/b at a 45-degree angle at the lower left corner of the featured item.
  13. Press the fold lightly.
  14. Lay the left side f/b right side down on the bottom f/b, folding the featured item in half diagonally. Open the fold you pressed in the left side f/b. Stitch both f/bs together along the fold. Trim to ¼" seam allowance.
  15. Turn the four pieces (featured fabric and three side f/bs) right side up and fold both of the side f/bs back on themselves and away from the top edge of the featured item.
  16. Place the top f/b face up on the table. Lay the featured item face down on the top f/b. Align the top edge of the featured item with the edge of the top f/b that you want closest to the featured item. Center the featured item on the top f/b. Stitch along the top edge of the featured item starting ¼" in from the left edge and stopping ¼" in from the right edge. Press the top f/b open and turn the five pieces right side up.
  17. Fold the top loose end of the left side f/b at a 45-degree angle at the top left corner. Press the fold lightly.
  18. Lay the left side f/b right side down on the top f/b. Stitch both f/bs together along the fold. Trim to ¼" seam allowance. Press open.
  19. Fold the top loose end of the right side f/b at a 45-degree angle at the top right corner. Press the fold lightly.
  20. Lay the right side f/b right side down on the top f/b. Stitch both f/bs together along the fold. Trim to ¼" seam allowance. Press open.
